Dear Dave 2/27/72 Sun. I finally finished Madelaines [?] ring & found an ivory case for it. I wrapped your valentine up with the ring and Jason [?] & Dick's [?] valentine. The postmistress told me to re-wrap the package. Anyway, my house burned down to the ground at 4:00 in the morning The cats woke Miles and he woke me up. Both of us were naked, and so it went. The only thing we found were our keys and cats. Evidently the gas wall heater leaked into the walls & we barely got out. The house burned to the ground [?] in ten minutes after we left. What's going on? I keep wondering & wondering. We're alright tho, worshiping our cats. Looking for a place; trying to get it together for Houston. Please tell Madelaine. I'm too, I don't know what to write. And I'm so sad about her ring. All my jewels & stuff was destroyed. Love Ellen

Rochester-by-the-sea July 26 [text from Peter] Bet you never made any 3-D cards! Hope your summer of freedom is fun. I missed you when I was in NYC—where I totally muffed my lengthly interview w/MOMA—though still haven't received final word. Best, Peter [text from Bonnie] David—When one is writing on the ocean it gets a little squiggly. In a week I am leaving for Montana & Colo. What have you been doing? On Sat. we are going to hear Benny Goodman. xo Bonnie

They have this incredibly sky in Italy that refuses to be background...asserts itself right to the front...I've seen it everywhere! Arrived in Florence yesterday—an afternoon rain cleared away the heat & haze...it's beautiful. Love, B.

Finally! A card worthy to send you in this land of endless quaint & fairy tale vistas. Our trip is nearly over...It's been a family marathon for me, good in most respects but I'm anxious to get home & back to work. Martin [?] has had a great experience working with his cousin reconstructing the old stone family house in the old village...it won't be finished when we leave but it will be ready for a roof. We haven't seen much of the country but have traveled widely in Spiddal. If the weather holds we'll go to the Aran Is. [Islands] tomorrow. Love, B.

[address redacted] 1/22/76 Dear David, Am enjoying nice slow pace of being a visiting prof. in Southern Cal. My colleagues spend as much if not more time in meetings than we do a Ramapo, but NOT ME! Am meeting & really liking the photographers here. Alan Sekula is good & so is Fred Lonidier, who is doing really interesting things. They are both VERY radical and smart. (No, I'm not going to stay here to live, but I'd like to retire & die here). Love, Carol

[text from Bonnie] Wish you were here to enjoy the sun. B. [text from Ellen] Dear Dave—We forgot our coats & ties, so they wouldn't let us in here! Oh well, we are still welcome at Carl's counter. Lots of new buildings, people, etc.—but of course lots of groovy food, bars and shops. Saw Ralph [Wolff] last night. He seems really well. Ivan's [?] still sitting on his front step. HAPPY EXHIBITION—we'll be thinking of you. Ellen, Gary + Bonnie

Dear Dave—Have we found a bar for you! The Zanzabar. Very cowboy. A bull-rider in a white hat asked me to dance: "Where you from?" "Boulder." "I bought a pickup in Boulder. You a college girl?" "Yes." "I thought so; you look pretty smart. Can I take you home tonight?" "No." "Why not? I'll probably never see you again." "Right." See you in Aug. Bonnie

Dear Dave Dear Mr Deardorff sent me a new 8x10 bless him, the other one and tripod were stolen in Thailand. Pisser. But I feel born again. Lucky I had good friends I could port with while I weathered the storm. I'm in Ceylon now, lots of jungle and ancient ruins, all very beautiful and up my alley—but christ is it hot, in fact the middle of the day is impossible. Saw some trans medivans [?] in Singapore their bodies like pin cushions of knives and skewers, I didn't photograph them but I'll never forget it! I expect to be back by x-mss I'll give you a call when I'm in the city. Love, Linda
Linda Connor to Dave Freund
Dear Dave Thought this one was rather festive. I'm heading west on Rt 66 thinking of Robert Frank—little time for picture stopping as school looms...but I do plan a short visit with the [Frederick] Sommer's—theres [sic] a picture spot near them I want to do again. I hope all is hunky dorry with you. Hugs Linda
Linda Connor to Dave Freund
Dear Dave, Finding old photo cards—has not been easy—everything rots away easily here. Thanks for your cards that were waiting for me. The trip is going well, except that they lost my camera & tripod on my last flight—and haven't located them yet...I'm slowly freaking out but I haven't gotten hysterical yet. One more day then panic. Doing India alone after all—that is after the camera gets solved. More to come. Love, Linda
Ann and Jack Vernon to Dave Freund
Dear Dave—thanks for the 7 dollars—& be sure to come by whenever you're traveling upstate. We'll do likewise when going south. that last part of summer was quite hectic with a rather depressing flamboyant wedding & then land negotiations after that. We did buy the land for $8,500—just waiting for the deed!! We both just applied for CAPS grants. Think Jack esp. will attempt to bet some money for next year. T. [Ted] Solaratoff [sic] from New Amer. Review will publish his essay on poetry & body in Jan. love—J. & A.

7/27 Hi Dave—Some summer! I couldn't get enough water & sun in Florida so I came here for 2 weeks. The underwater flora & fauna far exceed anything I could ever dream up. The colors & shapes of fishes & corals are surreal & abundantly diverse. I've got an underwater camera to play with but I doubt I'll get much of the feeling in the photos. Cozumel seriously needs a good postcard photographer. This one is way out front in quality, compared to the others. Love & kisses, Ellen
