The Image Is Art
This is a collection of postcards that are actually created as unique works of art—often a self-printed photograph, but no snapshots—by the sender, i.e., the postcard was not commercially printed

Everything remarkably O.K. One problem: lost the box with the [toners?] & the waterbed. Do you remember what else was in that box? Let me know as soon as possible. It's nice here, always sunny. But I really miss you—and everybody! Love Jude

Fri—Feeling low—just got REJECTED from SIU! Really surprised—was sure we'd both make this one! Seemed made for our stuff. Hope you're in. [heart] Love Jude

4/8/74 Barb—Assume Jim received this notice also but if not thought he might be interested. It's beautiful country up there. The photo dept. seems extremely active—art dept in general. Davis just accepted 2 painters into grad school. I'm feeling awful. Have another bad cold. Have been researching Persian miniatures—use of color, narrative, everything in rite [?] place—seems quite related. This one. A real quicky dealing with a border kind of symbolism. Did Agfa paper go up there? Went up 15% here. How much for 100 Portriga Rapid 8x10? I might need to have you mail me some. Much love Jude
Barbara Houghton to Jim Houghton
Jim—Thanks for the photo of the dream lover piece. I'm not sure I like the color as well as the b&w Maybe I ought to send the others out to be processed. This is me w/ my new hairdo. Doug took it at Deana's on Sunday. I was suppose [sic] to take pictures then but Cindy didn't give me the night nighty for Deena. Gotta do 'em this week plus print + matt. Help! Love to you Barbara P.S. Only 10 days...Want anything from Denver?

Sat—Had a GREAT day in L.A. I'm SO HIGH! They REALLY interviewed me. 1 1/2 hrs of questions—realize biggest problem is lack of experience. They're worried about that with 1/2 my duties working with grads! Felt good about myself—was honest so they'll either like me or I don't belong there. Robt. [Robert Heinecken] was fantastic. Said I'm his 1st choice still. They'll interview Eileen [Cowin] Mon—PRAY!!! I'll let you know as soon as I know. Bad hair—I gonna get to work! Love Jude

Sun. #2 the old training to only chose the photo (portrait) of yourself that looks the most perfect—glamorous etc seems to suddenly be very in my awareness. I'm also feeling SHITTY about my body. I must go on a diet—yet keep reaching for food to help (I think) stave off the anxiety. And it all recycles itself endlessly. Most of my peace is in the dim darkroom or shooting—when I can reach a flow that's positive—and unthinking! Much love Jude I'm lonesome!

[Sun—Just talked to you? am now at my studio & feeling so restless! Guess I will be till the job decision. Do I dare use this image for the poster for my M.F.A. show? It was part of a test & I forgot to take down the grey card—The one I colored & adorned with rollers isn't quite this revealing—I'm going through—do I want anyone to see me this way & maybe it looks TOO real (tho it isn't) My friend Kathe says it would blow their minds cause none of them could [scratch out] reveal so much. True I don't know anymore. [heart heart heart]

Barb—I'm floating high! Still can't believe UCLA! Haven't had time to call Joy yet—the deposition went O.K. too. Felt sorry for Dave—his lawyer is such an ass!!! Dave was out of work for a month last fall—and I realize how degrading it must be for him for me to know all his business. Esp. when his salary is $5,000 less than he's been making the last 7 years!!! He told lots of "little white lies"—never malicious, just conveniently can't remember much. No wonder I was so frustrated married to him. He refuses to face up to things. Think we can settle. I hope! Love Jude

Tues May 13. Barbara—It's really strange since I've been back—everyone is saying 'congratulations' but (I think) in a strange sort of way. The faculty seems to be ignoring my job—maybe some don't know about it but I doubt it. Are they jealous—or maybe think it's too soon —or maybe it's all in my head. Don't know Just sense coolness. Oh well—I'm going anyway. Oh! Lucy [Judith's daughter] and I went to see a councilor [sic] today —2 hrs and it was great! Can really see how me going in keeps her pushing. My new image on front.

Barbara/Got your letter today. Try to stay in the present girl. I'm hearing a lot of future wanderings! It'll all work out. Actually, your life is very exciting rite now—remember exciting & scary feel the same! Enjoy it!! I'm procrastinating these days. 2 1/2 wks till my MFA show & I'm SLOWLY finishing up a few pieces (3 so far since MARCH!). Ugh. Lots of new shooting w the magazine pages. They're really nice and I just feel like shooting & printing & not finishing. Solved my flat neg problems. Had 2 boxes (2 1/4) of bad film!! Bummer. Last [?] (new box) Terrific!
Paul Briggs to Bonnie Lambert

October 8 Well ladies, Rochester hasn't felt to bad, back home with my plants, books and darkroom—the place seems so huge and comfy. Trees playing rainbow exercises—raining even more than usual so I'm content to stay inside and print. If I didn't get restless I might get somewhere! Living with Helena Brunner (wonderful), Jim Hunter has found temporary residence in the living room (no comment at this point) Alex [Sweetman] is happy in Chicago, really seems to love the job & the people—will you come see us?? I really miss you here, haven't many people around to feel good with (I divorced the [Visual Studies] Workshop—our relationship was never too hot). love & a hug Kenda

...not mind re-iteration of some pts, lost for my own records: i.e. discussion of snapshots done in the Aperture issue of the same name, historical perspective, what is a snapshot, etc. Even "What is art", what is an artist trying to accomplish by doing art, yr. ideas on what value art has, and where, etc, etc, etc....

Nov 7 Dear Barb—Happy Birthday Did you move? You mentioned it but it's not sure when. Hope all is well. I really empathize with your situation—too bad there isn't more money. We could go to Mexico for Xmas. Now, THAT sounds good. Oh well, [scribble] more fantasies. I'm still not getting any work done—still spacey. Going around to galleries trying to set up a 1 person show for spring. Some good responses—but good galleries are booked for 2 years! I really like your womens [sic] photo show mailer. Classey [sic]. I'll write soon. Much love, Jude
Mark Johnstone to Marshall Mayer
Marshall—Have not talked to Scott [McLeod] lately; but personally am in the midst of some rather intense (color) shooting. Must talk to you soon, though (maybe up in Denver?). Mark
Mark Johnstone to Bonnie Lambert
Bonnie—Wonder if you might send me down some of yr. ideas on what YOU'D like to see done w/ the book before we meet. Would appreciate it. Mark ([address redacted])
Bonnie Lambert to Marshall Mayer
Saturday Dear Marshall—You won't believe it; we are in West Des Moines! Trying to find out why the car keeps missing...a good trick on a Saturday. So, as you can see we are not making great time. Nothing major though. On to Chicago, I hope. Iowa is purdy + has rolled hay. Miss you xoxo Bonnie
Marshall Mayer to Bonnie Lambert
Dear Bonnie, I hope this made it in one piece. This is part of what I sent to the Ferguson grant—it is one of only two prints that were really good. Stains again. Sometimes I don't know. (I'm watching Mary Hartman, etc.—the most depressing show ever conceived.) I think I'm going to Colorado Springs for the 4th though I could think of a dozen places or people I'd rather be with— all of which are highly improbable.—I finally got all moved—I really can't wait to move to Seattle—no kidding a place of my own again. I'm buying a bumper so I can hitch a trailer. Exciting, huh? Let me know what you're up to. Love, Marshall
Marshall Mayer to Mark Johnstone
Mark, This is an example of my work for the book—I hope its' [sic] in one piece. Sorry we didn't get to look at you're book stuff—we actually came looking for you after the printer but nowhere to be located. I'll most likely be down for the 4th with some work—I'll probably call to verify anything. I moved—[address redacted and phone]. Just finished applying to Ferguson Grant to pay for this book—I sure home Scott [McLeod] can do a better job—200 line screen AT LEAST. We all want it nice. Molly's getting excited to come. Marshall
Marshall Mayer to Mark Johnstone
