Dear Dave 2/27/72 Sun. I finally finished Madelaines [?] ring & found an ivory case for it. I wrapped your valentine up with the ring and Jason [?] & Dick's [?] valentine. The postmistress told me to re-wrap the package. Anyway, my house burned down to the ground at 4:00 in the morning The cats woke Miles and he woke me up. Both of us were naked, and so it went. The only thing we found were our keys and cats. Evidently the gas wall heater leaked into the walls & we barely got out. The house burned to the ground [?] in ten minutes after we left. What's going on? I keep wondering & wondering. We're alright tho, worshiping our cats. Looking for a place; trying to get it together for Houston. Please tell Madelaine. I'm too, I don't know what to write. And I'm so sad about her ring. All my jewels & stuff was destroyed. Love Ellen

Dear Dave; Waiting at the air-port to leave Puerto Rico & already the stepped up pace has me in a snit. Some beautiful quiet revelations here. Hitchhiked to a small coast town & stayed with a local family. (Thanks to Hisachika who brought me). Many siestas, learned to climb palm trees 2nd day so could get water & food on beach. Surfed [?] & [?] surfboard. Cock fights, pigs, goats, ox. A neighbor gave us Thanksgiving dinner after a long walk from beach. Belladonna growing in every yard. Homemade houses—all. No water for 1 wk. O.K. Back to NYC how to pay rent, finish commissions, hurry, hurry. I feel my shoulder & neck muscles getting tighter, oh shit, oh well—so much happened. A letter can say. Love Ellen
