...One idea which evolved in thinking about yr. proposal to accept much of what is labeled "snapshots" these days, as such was that it seems to me that the snapshot was always "calculated" in its observant quality, as pointed by the one who took it. This seems an inherent part of its documentation of the family unit/experience. Does it matter then if the intent is to record, or personal,...

Dear Mark I would love to see you; bring a portfolio of your GREATEST WORKS. Telephone number in Danville ([redacted]. Anytime. You can always teach some of my classes, although you might find them different from those in a private girls school. If you need a good book to buy (for yourself) get J. [John] Szarkowski's LOOKING AT PHOTOGRAPHS (Museum of Modern Art). Tom Besides which, we can go to the local (San Francisco—Berkeley) exhibitions of photography. This is a good month for same.

Dear Bonnie: CONGRATULATIONS on your post card debut. Looks pretty good to me. Yeah, Susan Mogul (named after the skiing obstacle?) was very pleasant in conveying your greetings. I have about 3 weeks to go on my very last paper. Then I sit down for a four month grind in preparation for a 1 1/2 hour oral exam. (Mind-blower.) After that I'm certified as qualified to attempt, possibly, to write a dissertation. Did you know that [Robert] Sobieszek is now a co-student of mine? Behind me in the program, even. Did I tell you now, I'm, alas, once again a bachelor? But my work is going better than in years. Love, Pete. [P.S. John Sz. [Szarkowski] admired your wrapped finder photo on my wall!] (a beauty of a show)
