Kiddies: Not this time... Lotsa stuff popping (although nothing big to notate, only that I no longer have the use of Beth's truck, nor Beth,—catch my drift?). I hope I can make it down in May sometime. My life runs at a casual pace approximating land speed records. M

M+B: Did you know that Maxwell's expanded? Back room... B—Never did receive anything about that (fantastically surreal) union you spoke of on the phone; M—Recognize the rear on the reverse of this card? I hate 100º weather, still can't go nuts over the beach. Dealing w/ school makes me cranky. I resent not having money—though it's because of where I am; I wouldn't care if this place were pleasant. Living here instills a desire for power, which I'm not sure of the value of. Oh well, later M

Am coming to L.A. with a T.A.! Got word today! Will mail you info tommorrow, Marshall. Yahoo! M

If you get a chance, would appreciate ya picking up a Kodak tray siphon (Beth needs one). Pay ya back on arrival. Thanks, M

1 more week of bust-ass, and then I sink into normal 40 hr... Will then arrange to come down with Marianne (whose legs grace the reverse). Send me all the publications you've been in (books, magazines, show catalogs, etc) + date of birth and I'll get you in a book coming out, listing contemporary photographers Later (it's so nice to be madly in love...!)

dear kids: i forgot to tell you on the last postcard that connie (the girl who mixed up our pics in leviathan) wants to buy yr. photographs any prices? they did a second operation on tony [Godec] and he seems to be ok. but i shit in my pants when i heard that it can take up to a year for one to recover from this kind of thing. pray for miracles. otherwise nothing is new. my diet is bad, i fart a lot. no burping, though. later, mark

Dear Bonnie, I hope this made it in one piece. This is part of what I sent to the Ferguson grant—it is one of only two prints that were really good. Stains again. Sometimes I don't know. (I'm watching Mary Hartman, etc.—the most depressing show ever conceived.) I think I'm going to Colorado Springs for the 4th though I could think of a dozen places or people I'd rather be with— all of which are highly improbable.—I finally got all moved—I really can't wait to move to Seattle—no kidding a place of my own again. I'm buying a bumper so I can hitch a trailer. Exciting, huh? Let me know what you're up to. Love, Marshall
Mark Johnstone to Bonnie Lambert and Marshall Mayer
B+M: What fun! Little snow, little playing, lotsa food, no cares. Remind me to retire @ age 35, after I have amassed a great fortune, and to spend a part of my winter in the snow. Photographically, well—it's the midwest. I suppose that's life. M
Mark Johnstone to Bonnie Lambert and Marshall Mayer
Hey kiddies,—How was the trip? How's school? We's gonna have to get together one of these weekends—yr. place or mine? Lemme know when ya get a phone. My #: [redacted]. Ta Dee La, Later Mark Marsh: Something just came up where I must talk to you about conceptual photo. Will be down next Friday unless I hear from you to the contrary. Will see you then. M (It's for a damn grad seminar class)

Hey kids—Sorry to hear about the nose dive the Mazda took......I still haven't gotten the flashes, have been on the rep's butt, MUCH about it. Never did get around to sending you notice of yr. share of phone calls that came in on the Feb. bill. Twas only 4, 5, 6 bucks worth. This is what I want you to do about it: go out + buy a GOOD bottle of champagne and celebrate my coming out in Sept! Got "unnofficial" OK on the TA @ USC! YAHOO! M
Mark Johnstone to Bonnie Lambert and Marshall Mayer
Saint Louis is hectic and continually drizzly. As fas as what's happening photographically, it's all (grass) roots, about six feet under. After all, this is the heart of the midwest. The [Sam] Wagstaff show wasn't that interesting. M
Marshall Mayer to Bonnie Lambert
Dear Bonnie, This is the postcard I was looking for. It's even done by Scott [McLeod]. I can't believe how much my life has changed. It all comes home now that you're gone. Besides pining alot I'm printing all night tonight—incredibly good stuff so far. And I made really good food today. So all is well. But I miss you alot so hurry back. Love, Marshall

Bonnie, We missed the rain down south but have been driving through it in the Sierras. A dry but nearly sleepless night. Tape machine busted, charged a new one. M2 shutter clogged but fixed. Some REALLY terrific meals and conversations. June Lake doesn't have a breakfast house. Clutch OK. These mountains aren't the Sierras—North Cascades. Love xoxoxo Marshall

Dear Bonnie, These structures are big out here but can't tell what the charcoal is for. A long day yesterday through Nevada + beautiful country. Slept VERY well last night. Today through UTAH and into Colo. Nevada is a LOST state—not a single good restaurant there. love + kisses + snorts Marshall

Friday Dear Bonnie, Guess where we are!—Spent last night in RMNP after another good day of driving but no good food. Just found Gary [Metz] and will spend the night there. Have to do some minor work on the car. High altitude blues. Should be in DM tomorrow night. Not getting too much research done cause we're pretty tired. Planning on a cheeseburger at Tom's and breakfast at Dotties Diner. I'll call soon. Marshall x0x0x0 P.S. Gary is as interesting as ever.

Dear Bonnie, I meant to get this in the mail yesterday so I might be home already! Tired of driving so we're speeding home—in Albuquerque this morning at the Little House Cafe. The two who run it are married and have been here for 29 years. SOOO romantic. My hobo-in'days are over—I'll be glad to be home. Love, Marshall xoxoxo

Dear Bonnie—I couldn't go back to sleep this morning so I was on the road at 9:30 and drove 600 miles. 115º in Needles. Truck + cargo OK. Thundershowers in Big Bear. Jack [Allen] gave me $200 traveling money so I'm in a motel tonight. I'm watching TV. Needles was the hot spot in the nation. Ugh! Traveling alone ain't easy. No pictures yet. Found a hiway diner in Williams. Stayin tomorrow night in Mesa Verde. xoxo Love Marshall

Marsh baby—The word is go on you and Mark [Mayer] giving a talk, though it would be end of the semester [Dec/Jan]. Probably could finalize (or better generalize) dates in about a month. Bonnie— How the kittens? Hows teaching? How's Trixie? (Who's Trixie?) Later, M
Mark Johnstone to Marshall Mayer and Bonnie Lambert
Marshall + Bonnie: This may be one of the last times I drive this baby—fella comin' tonight + is real interested. Will be in L.A. 'round Aug 8. ...not mind re-iteration of some pts, lost for my own records: i.e. discussion of snapshots done in the Aperture issue of the same name, historical perspective, what is a snapshot, etc. Even "What is art", what is an artist trying to accomplish by doing art, yr. ideas on what value art has, and where, etc, etc, etc....
Mark Johnstone to Marshall Mayer (3 of 5)
...One idea which evolved in thinking about yr. proposal to accept much of what is labeled "snapshots" these days, as such was that it seems to me that the snapshot was always "calculated" in its observant quality, as pointed by the one who took it. This seems an inherent part of its documentation of the family unit/experience. Does it matter then if the intent is to record, or personal,...

...or to "do art" [in the "mode" of a "modern academy"]. Is it just not an evolution of the education of photographers to [unconsciously?] include + incorporate into their quickly made images, elements of design + timing which challenge the more traditional concepts of "record the kids in the center of the frame when they look their best"...
Mark Johnstone to Marshall Mayer (5 of 5)
...Anyway, so much for the ontology of the snapshot. Would still like to see sometime copies of yr. papers fr. UNM (self-portraits, etc.). Mark

Marshall: Here is a fine meal @ the High Life Bar + Cafe in Pueblo (Magdelena moved from Roy's). Please note the scale. If I can't find anyone to keep animals when I come, can I bring them and leave them w/ you when I go to Boston? If no, say so. Right now we are about to sort for the final show. Much interesting work. Later, and don't take any wooden nukey. M

Marsh: 1) Forget video camera avail here. It is a 3/4 inch—so 2) Lets set up exchange of tapes, if only between you + me as a base for a type of dialogue 3) Am still trying to set up performance/presentation 4) Fucking Saab is doing its best to break down 5) When LA bites, it bites hard 6) I think nos 1, 3 + 4 have something to do w/ art. Marsh: Probably will arrive on or about Aug 25—Can't really make it sooner because of logistics in getting from Boston to L.A. Might be able to make it a wee bit sooner. [Michael] Ballou and I are dynamite in volleyball as the human wall and the ten foot spike. Got some dynamite stuff to show you when I get out. Am finally getting some stuff I like.

Marshall—Thanks for yr. thought-provoking comments on my writing, I need as much feedback as I can get concerning it. Would you be interested in doing a joint piece of writing? Maybe we can plan a get together Fri nite or Sat morning before shindig @ BC Space Dec 9? I never did hear how Joshua Tree was.....or the outcome of the engine that expired.....Went up to the Sierras last week, but got snowed out premature to the planned end of the trip. First time up to 11,000 feet since Colorado. Butt-ass cold, too. Gus packed his own food up. cute. M
Mark Johnstone to Marshall Mayer
It's so nice here! And seemingly so much happening @ ground roots level. 3-4 photo galleries with major (financial) oomph behind 'em. + a commitment @ the art museum. Good place for me to consider post-USC..... M

Friday Achtoeber 12, 1976 Dearest Marshall, I suppose you already have this card, but here's another. It was wonderful to talk to you. I miss you. I am going to do some photos on the light box—using the slide film + the flash. Just in case I get to learn Cibachrome (+ it looks like I might—in a week or two) I can be ready—how about a 16 x 20 monochrome? Nice huh? love, BGL

Dear Marshall, Well, in terms of getting famous, nothing has happened. OK Harris only deals with "cold + dispassionate realism," my pics are "too mystical." Light Gallery is putting me off because V. [Victor] Schraeger is just back in town from Europe; but I will persist. I will take the stuff to the Modern today, + have a lunch date with the guy at Castelli Graphics—he used to be at Light, + is as friend of Peter's [Galassi]. Shuck + jive. Spent yesterday lugging my prints around Soho...

6.30.76 continued and then just wandered around little Italy trying to resist the pastry shops (I didn't, I finally stopped at the Palermo Cafe + indulged my over-active sweet tooth.) This trip was/is very good for dispelling all sorts of emotional-romantic ties with Peter [Galassi]. Will explain more when I see you, which is too far away. xoxoxo Bonnie

later the same day. found this + a few other treasures for you on my walk home. It is very hot here + of course, wet. I am really getting into iced coffee—I'm having my 3rd glass for today. Saw a show of Japanese kimono—exquisite things. One took a year to tie (for the tie-dye) + a year to untie. Now that is art! Wish you were here with me. [heart] BGL

7.2.76 This is the cold eye of disbelief + this is where I am now. I'm at Light Gallery + Victor [Schraeger] is late, + I'm getting depressed 'cause I got your nice card, but it was sooo laconic + far away, + I stayed in bed too long or not long enough, + then when I did go out the wind was blowing real hard. later, having talked with Victor, I feel like I chocked [sic] on the Cracker Jack prize. Oh well, maybe I'll get over it after I eat my swiss cheese sandwich. love, Bonnie

Marshall, We saw this mountain Sunday while sailing—unreal!!!! I am applying for school here—I think I can get in for the winter quarter and I don't know how we will pay for it yet. $545 per quarter for 9 or 12 credits. I think only 9 credits will transfer from NM cause they don't require art history here. Write us and tell us if you got the Mazda. I'll send a slide of this trailer soon. Mark.

July 4, 1976 Dear Marshall—The Empire State Building is now lit up in red, white + blue lights. It IS beautiful. And my poor Chrysler Building gets nary a bare bulb. Today we will watch the tall ships + I will eat one of those 10 million hot dogs. Forgive me my last bout of petulance (?); I am better about it all but it will all wait till I see you. I can't wait. love, BGL

I went to this zoo, + the studio that made this photo while I was in Mont. this time. xo BGL [from Marshall] I will drop a line to Jack Allen this week about your employment. [from Marshall] Mark, We finally broke open that bottle of champagne you gave us to celebrate (?) the deflowering of the Mazda. $625 damage in a head-on collision. Oh well, we have enough to cover it. [from Bonnie] Mark—The champagne sure helped! (The guy who hit us was drunk.) Does Tony [Godec] know you are quitting? I've planted tomatoes, strawberries, & sweet peas. love, Bonnie

Dear Mark—Can't make a trip to Laguna because Frick and Frack left me with a bummer car—Mark's funky mini-Honda. I'm only supposed to go to the grocery store, Club 30, etc. Am being lazy—reading too many New Yorkers! Wish I could come & visit. Are you thinking abt. Joshua Tree in Oct? xo Bonnie

May 18, 1977 Hey Mark, Thanks for the special delivery. a real surprise + feat. Guess you're abt. ready for Bean Town. Let us know where you are when. Okay pimple head! I found my ugliest postcard to send to you: how come you never address ME in your correspondence? You think I'm retarded or blind? Creep. See if I EVER make you another pecan pie. I hope you get crabs in your beard! Your ex-friend, Bonnie

Marshall 6-4-76 Here is your stuff. I had to wait for the slides & money to buy the Smith [?] record. I think you will enjoy them. Keep the slides around, and bring them with you. They're the only ones. "Mixed emotions" got cut off so I have to redo that. These are all postcards from Orcas Island where Mary Donner works. It's incredible. We have to buy land up there some day.
Mark and Brenda Mayer to Marshall Mayer (2 of 6)
This is a boat that Bob [Figgis] & I worked on once but it's a wreck now. This photo is about 5 years old. Neat! I'm working on a small loose paged book now about the Morgan Gallery show. It has photographs of us & Brenda from last summer. I'll explain over the phone. Some written mat. in it also.
Mark and Brenda Mayer to Marshall Mayer (3 of 6)
What the hell is stopping you from coming out here sooner? I think bob [Figgis] is moving out of the studio at the end of Sept—fucker never sticks with anything. He is not doing any art at all. All he thinks about is boats & I'm getting sick of it. I want different things out of life, so -----. It looks like you & I have the place to ourselves after that.
Mark and Brenda Mayer to Marshall Mayer (4 of 6)
You have a job here when you get here—I'm takin' care of you—at Denny's as a cook—one of Brenda's managers just got transferred to another store and said for you to come over when you get there and he will hire you. How's that!? I'll send you proofs of this book when I get them. How about those boxes. I'm still making them also.
